Hardscaping in Cincinnati Built for Hillside Yards

Hardscaping is the built part of a yard. Retaining walls, paver patios, walkways, drainage, fencing. Hardscaping on Cincinnati’s west side almost always means building on a slope, and that is the work we were built for, from our own shop on Gracely Drive in Sayler Park.

WHAT WE BUILD

Hardscaping Services Across Cincinnati’s West Side

Four kinds of work make up most of what we build. A wall to hold the ground, a patio or walkway to use it, drainage to keep water moving and fencing to close the space in. On a hillside lot they usually arrive together.

Retaining Walls

A wall that leans or cracks is not a cosmetic problem. It is ground moving. We build structural block walls sized for what they actually hold, with the base and the drainage behind them that keep them standing. Most walls go up in two to three days.

Paver Patios & Walkways

A patio is the reason to go outside. We cut paver patios and walkways into the grade instead of fighting it, so the part of the yard nobody used becomes the part everybody sits in. Most patios install in about two days.

Drainage

Standing water starts uphill from where you see it. French drains, regrading and downspout work move roof and hillside water off the yard at the source, which is the difference between fixing it and doing it again next spring.

Fencing

Privacy fence and three-rail, set to the line and to the grade so the top stays honest across a slope. We do not install chain link.

WHY PRIORITY

Built for Hillside Country

Most design-build companies serve the west side from across town. We’re based in it. That matters twice: our crews know how these slopes drain, settle and erode, and our shop on Gracely Drive is minutes from your project, not a highway drive away.

Because of that, we plan every wall, patio and drainage project around the ground it sits on.

  1. DesignPlanned around your slope, your drainage and how you want to live outside.
  2. BuildEngineered and installed by our own crew, minutes from your project.
  3. EnhanceSeasonal care that keeps it looking finished, year after year.

What Hardscape Customers Say

Neighborhood Favorite, Nextdoor 2024 & 2025 Best Landscaping Crew, Cincinnati Magazine 2024 & 2025

Our customers tell it better than we can. One asked us to help “plan the perfect outdoor living space.” Another hired us for a water feature and said we “made sure we were educated on all of our decisions.” The reviews below come from Google and Facebook as customers post them, filtered to the projects we built rather than the lawns we mow.

COST AND TIMELINE

What a Wall or Patio Actually Costs

  • $3,000 Where an average wall or patio project starts
  • 2 Days A typical paver patio, start to finish
  • 2 to 3 Days A typical retaining wall

Three things move that number more than anything else: how easily equipment reaches the work area, how large the area is and which material you pick. None of the three show up in a photo, which is why every quote comes after we walk the property.

Serving Cincinnati’s West Side

Our shop and yard sit on Gracely Drive in Sayler Park, so most of our work is a short drive rather than a highway trip. That is why we can get back out to a job the same week instead of the next month.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Hardscaping Questions We Get Asked

What is hardscaping?

Hardscaping is the built, non-living half of a landscape. Retaining walls, paver patios, walkways, drainage and fencing all count. Planting, sod and mulch are the softscape half. On a hillside lot the hardscape usually has to come first, because there is not much point planting a bed on ground that is still moving or on a slope that sends water toward the foundation.

What is the difference between a retaining wall and a garden wall?

A retaining wall holds ground back. A garden wall sits on level ground and defines a space. The difference is structural, not decorative. A wall that retains soil carries real load and needs the right base, the right block and drainage behind it, while a wall that holds nothing back does not. We size and build walls for what they are actually holding, which on the west side is usually a slope with water moving through it.

Can you build a patio on a sloped yard?

Yes, and most of the patios we build are on slopes. The usual approach is to cut a level area into the grade and hold the high side with a retaining wall, so the patio sits flat while the hill stays put. That is why walls and patios get quoted together around here more often than either one gets quoted alone.

What materials do you use for hardscaping?

Concrete block for retaining walls and concrete pavers for patios and walkways, both available in a range of colors and textures. Material choice moves the price as much as the size of the area does, so we walk through the options with you before quoting. Stone, topsoil and mulch come from our own yard on Gracely Drive, which means the material for a job is minutes away rather than on a supplier schedule.

Do you design the project before you build it?

Yes. Every project starts with a free on-site walk of the property, where we look at grade, drainage, access for equipment and how you want to use the space. The design follows the ground rather than a template. You get a written quote and a build schedule after that visit, so you know what the yard looks like on each day of the work.

When should I schedule a wall or patio?

Earlier than most people expect. Hardscape work starts earlier in the spring and runs later into the fall than planting does, so the season is longer than it looks. Install calendars fill by May, which means a project planned in late winter usually lands a spring slot, while a call in June is often looking at late summer.
